I have compiled a list of my favorite movies and shows. I love to read but sometimes you just want to curl up on the sofa and watch something great on tv. You’ll find I love anything historical, simple living, old fashioned…with a fair splashing for the romantic. Now this isn’t a complete list but it is a good start for my fellow historical, homesteading, BBC-loving and romantic kindred spirits.
I’ve let you know when you can find them streaming or the link to get the dvd. So pop up some popcorn, get your softest blanket and let’s watch something good!
My Favorite Movies and Shows
Here is the list of my favorite movies and shows, in no particular order…
Wilderness Family – A family from California leaves the big city behind to live off the land in the wilderness. I loved all 3 of these films.
Pride and Prejudice – I will admit that I watch this regularly. My youngest, who is 10, and I will pop some popcorn and curl up for a night of Mr. Darcy and the wonderful antics of Mrs. Bennet. If you have a Amazon Prime account then you can steam this for free.
“It’s a truth universally acknowledged, that a single man in possession of a good fortune, must be in want of a wife.”
Lark Rise to Candleford – A wonderful BBC series based on the memoirs of Flora Thompson. There is so much to love here but my personal favorite character is Queenie. She tends her bees, gardens, makes home remedies and hand makes lace. Right now you can’t stream for free but you can watch them on Amazon.com
Second Hand Lions – A garden, a lion and a kid…oh my! A great family flick.
Sarah Plain and Tall – We loved the book series and I highly recommend that but the movie is lovely too. Sarah comes as a mail order bride from the east a homestead in Kansas. Not streaming free.
Sense and Sensibility – if you love Pride and Prejudice then you’re probably going to love this story as well. I actually prefer it, but I’m careful who I tell that too (wink). Not streaming free.
“I come here with no expectations, only to profess, now that I am at liberty to do so, that my heart is and always will be yours.”
When Calls the Heart – A newer series that runs on the Hallmark channel. I don’t have cable but the first 2 seasons are on Netflix. The series is based on a book series of the same title. I love the stories of small town life on the Western Frontier of Canada.
Lost in Austen – a play on Pride and Prejudice when a modern woman ends up in the story. This one is a watch before you let kids under 13 watch; just to make sure it is all cool with you. I enjoy most of the twists in the story line. 😉 Not steaming free.
My Side of the Mountain – The book is better, I can’t lie; but this is a great story. A boy and the wilderness…great for kids!
Jane Eyre – you’ll find many versions of this classic book put to film, but I’m linking you to my favorite. This is not your classic love story… You’ll find this on Netflix and Amazon.
Little House on the Prairie – I couldn’t possibly have a complete list without Little House! Who doesn’t love Pa and Ma? I grew up wanting to be Laura and Pa to call me Half-Pint! Great series to watch as a family. Not streaming free but soooooo worth the DVD investment.
Downton Abbey – Oh how I’ve loved this series, now playing its last season in the US. I love the Dowager Countess – proper sass. This isn’t a family friendly but a great one to watch with some tea and a biscuit. 😉 Streams on Amazon prime!
“There’s nothing simpler than avoiding people you don’t like. Avoiding one’s friends, that’s the real test.” ~Dowager Countess
