Have I got some Sun Oven cooking and tips for you! I love my All American Sun Oven! I have had it a few years now and I am just amazed at how well it cooks, just about everything! As the summer heats up here in Phoenix, I use my Sun Oven more and more; because using my kitchen oven just heats up the house I’m trying to keep cool.
You can use your All American Sun Oven all year long but summer has longer hours of sun, so it just seems to be out more. Solar cooking is really simple but there are a few tips that can make getting started super easy!
Sun Oven Cooking and Tips
Sun Oven Tips
*Your Sun Oven is a slow cooker.
I know some cook fast in the Sun Oven; but I have found I get better results from slow cooking. For the most part you need to look at your Sun Oven cooking as slow roaster/baker (slow cooker). This is not the tool to use when you need something in a hurry.
*Your Sun Oven will need you to move it.
When you’re cooking you’ll need to check your Sun Oven from time to time to be sure it is in the optimal position (aka in full sun). The great thing about the All American Sun Oven is that it has a focus cube built in to help you keep that position easily. I like to check my position about every 30 – 40 minutes; but that may be overkill for some.
*Weather Matters
You’re not going to want to try your Sun Oven cooking on overcast days. Solar cooking = full sun. BUT it doesn’t have to be hot outside to work. Solar cooking can be done all year round!
*Know your temps
Invest is a good digital food thermometer that can set outside of the cooker. That way you won’t need to keep opening your dish to see if meats have completely cooked.
*Pre-heat
You’ll want to pre-heat your Sun Oven or solar cooker just like you do your oven.
*Set and forget?
Generally I don’t set my Sun Oven up when I’m away from home, but it can be done. Just make sure the oven is in an area with little to no sun obstruction. That way, even if it isn’t always in optimal sun, it is always getting sun. You can run errands and come home to a meal that is ready to eat…energy free!
*Dehydrate it
Yep, you can even dehydrate foods in your Sun Oven. I love my Nesco but why not dehydrate without using any electricity?
