We have had our current coop for about 8 months. I rake it out, it has stayed pretty clean but not smell free. Then this oppressive heat wave has come through and we’ve been running a mister for hours to keep the girls cool. This lead to a dirt floor coop becoming a mud floor coop.
You know what smells worse than a chicken coop? A wet chicken coop.
So I did a little research on getting the mess cleaned up and keeping it cleaner and fresher. The verdict was Sweet PDZ and sand. This is supposed to make cleaning the coop a lot like scooping a kitty litter box…I think that is meant to be better. :/
So after many phone calls and a 40 minute one-way trip to the only feed store that was open and carried PDZ. Then a trip to the local Home Depot for sand, I was ready to go.
Ok, brace yourselves because this isn’t pretty and be thankful this is not smellow-net.
BEFORE:
We “mucked” it out and a lot went into the compost bin. We took everything out and raked it…the girls really enjoyed that part…
After the raking I added a dusting of the Sweet PDZ granules and sweet hubby came in with the 60 lbs bags of sand. He’s awesome!
Rake, another dusting of Sweet PDZ, rake some more…remember it was still 110 degrees at 6:30 pm when we started this.
This does not do it justice! It is so clean and fresh! We put in 4 of the 60 lbs bags and it probably needs 2-3 more. I will also be adding it to the floor of the roosting area.
I’ll keep you posted on how the sand works for us.
